CHEVELLE SS 396 OVERVIEW:
The Chevrolet Chevelle SS is easily one of the most popular muscle cars from the era of high-performance muscle powered by big-block V8s. Although unknown at the time, the 1969 model year was edging closer to the demise of the movement with the oil crisis looming on the horizon that would cause people to buy smaller cars for fuel efficiency. Here we have a beautiful example of a 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396.
Because the SS 396 package was available on any two-door Chevelle, the probability of acquiring a “post coupe” was plausible, although in most cases you’ll see them in hardtop and convertible guise. Overall styling looked similar to the initial redesign that appeared a year prior. Subtle differences were relegated to an updated SS-trimmed grille, a reconfigured front bumper, and a new tailpanel and taillamp design, the former of which was finished in matte black with an “SS” emblem. Emblems were also affixed to each front fender. Convertible tops were available in white, black, and blue, and included a glass rear window, rather than heavy-duty plastic.
Chevelles were not immune to rust when left to the elements unchecked. Aside from the previously mentioned trouble spots, the window channels, trunk pans, and convertible floors should all be inspected carefully. So, too, should the outer wheel lips, inner quarter panels, and lower portions of the front fenders.
